La Mariana is a Sailing Club...sorta! The atmosphere is a perfect spot of tranquility to start the inevitable unwinding process.

We thought this place was a goner after the tsunami! But lucky for us it survived…

Though this place is out of the way, and off the beaten track, it is a must if you haven’t experienced it. It’s why you love Hawaii! One of our favorite locations.

Tuesday, January 10, 2012
Cocktails and Dinner 6:30pm

La Mariana Sailing Club (The Hide-a-Way)

50 Sand Island Access Rd
Honolulu, HI 96819

Parking: Street, but free and usually no problem

La Mariana is a Sailing Club…sorta! The atmosphere is a perfect spot of tranquility to start the inevitable unwinding process. Nice generous pours of rum and smiling friendly service = relaxation at its finest. My favorite description of this place is: “Think of what the ideal tiki bar would look like”. No air conditioning here, open to the harbor view. We’ll get a great seat, enjoy good food, a cold brew and count the pufferfish light fixtures, tiki’s or number of shells. The evening piano music adds to the ambiance.

The Seafood Brochette a favorite. It consisted of shrimp, scallops, mahi, and an assortment of vegetables. The mushrooms are unforgettable. The brochette rests in a thin layer of white cheesy sauce, and while the pieces of seafood were fabulous a la carte, the sauce added an addictive element to the taste. Another favorite is the Seafood Stuffed Eggplant! A must try!

The ambiance alone will put you in the mood for love

Duc’s (pronounced Duke’s) is a little restaurant in the Chinatown area, downtown Honolulu. It’s a quaint little place, and when you walk from the street into the restaurant you are transported into a completely different environment. Lovely Chinese lanterns and a giant dragon head hang from the ceiling while an automated baby grand piano softly plays pop and jazz standards and some evenings there is live soloist playing..The romantic lighting and the sweet, smooth sounds create a nice, relaxed atmosphere. The ambiance alone will put you in the mood for love.

Duc’s was primarily a French restaurant before the owner decided to tweak their menu by adding Vietnamese dishes. Thus an East meets West theme is reflected in the menu.

Wed, Feb 29. 2012
social at 6:30pm, dinner to follow

Duc’s Bistro

Parking:
Validated parking in the lot across the street: Diamond Lot

The Olympic Chicken ($16.00) which is aptly named because this deserves a gold medal. Tender chicken breasts lay submerged beneath a savory layer of sauce made of Chesapeake Bay Crab meat and mushrooms. Try some of the Vietnamese inspired dishes such as the Pan Fried Fish with Green Mango ($12.00) or Lamb Tenderloin with La Lot ($17.00) for a complete review.
The escargo is a perfect balance of butter, garlic, and mushroom. The lamb holds something different for the palate with a Vietnamese lemongrass flavor coupled with an undertone of Chinese 5 spice.

Go family style and share the braised white fish, it will melt in your mouth, or try the venison – tender with a red wine veal stock gravy, How about the duck which is cooked to medium and is accompanied by a beautiful chili water dipping sauce with a subtle sweetness and a hint of refreshing citrus. Top it all off with dessert such as a simple creme brulee ($5.00), all of which is executed competently.

Koko Marina Pub

Koko Marina Center (Hawaii Kai)
7192 Kalaniana’ole Highway
Honolulu, Hawaii

Featuring a state-of-the-art beer delivery system with 24 taps, the restaurant is adorned with ohia posts, copper-mica light fixtures featuring Kona Brewing Company’s various beer logos. With colored concrete, koa wood furnishing and the unique use of brewing equipment as functional decor – an old brew kettle and a retired brewery mash tun recycled as exterior signage and to form the exhaust hood for the pizza ovens located in the open air kitchen. The Full-panel windows are retractable and provide an airy atmosphere throughout the restaurant. With ample outdoor seating and views of Koko Marina and the lush green mountains that form Hawaii Kai’s backdrop.

Kona Brewing Company was started in the spring of 1994 by father and son team Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa. Originally from Oregon and with their love of the Big Island of Hawaii they saw a need to create fresh, locally made brews with the same spirit and passion for quality that existed in the Pacific Northwest. The result is three flagship beers that are now widely distributed, and approximately 10 other styles of beer are brewed on a regular basis.

A quick review of the wonderful menu reaches all the tastes you desire. This restaurant including a daily fish special prepared three different ways with the fish caught daily right from the area! Talk about FRESH!
